What is a Grotto?
A Grotto is a local chapter of MOVPER. It is similar in structure to other Masonic bodies, but it places a strong emphasis on fun, fellowship, and community service. Grottos are known for their unique customs, light-hearted meetings, and charitable work, particularly for children with disabilities, such as the Humanitarian Foundation, which provides dental care for special needs children.
What Goes On in a Grotto?
- Fraternal Gatherings: Meetings and social events are designed to promote camaraderie among members.
- Ritual & Symbolism: While not as elaborate as traditional Masonic rituals, there are initiations and symbolic aspects tied to the "Enchanted Realm" theme.
- Philanthropy: A major focus is charitable giving, particularly through the Humanitarian Foundation.
- Parades & Public Events: Many Grottos participate in parades and wear distinctive fezzes (similar to the Shriners) as a recognizable symbol of their fraternity.
- Casual Atmosphere: Unlike the serious nature of Blue Lodge Masonry, Grottos encourage humor and relaxation.
How to Join a Grotto
- Be a Master Mason: Membership is open only to Master Masons in good standing with a recognized Masonic Lodge.
- Find a Local Grotto: You can visit the official Grottoes of North America website or ask fellow Masons if there is a local chapter.
- Petition for Membership: Just like other Masonic bodies, you’ll need to complete a petition and pay any associated fees or dues.
- Attend an Initiation: After approval, you’ll go through an initiation ceremony to become a Prophet of the Enchanted Realm.
